Blockade & capitulation of Pernau, July-August 1710

Blockade of Pernau, 1710
Блокада Пернова, 1710
(Книга марсова. СПб. 1766),
Swedish garrison of Pernau consisted of 2 foot regiments & a small detachment of recruits of Nyland regiment in 1710. Both regiments had authorized strength of about 800 men each, but their exact strength is unknown. They heavily suffered from disease, a lack of supplies & desertion in winter-spring of 1710. Captives estimated total garrison's strength around 1,000 men at the start of the siege. Commandant was colonel Jakob Henrik von Schwengelm.
Regiments of Pernau garrison in 1710:
  • Livland varvade regiment under colonel Magnus Wilhelm Nieroth composed of 16 coys (50 men each): overste (colonel's Lifkompaniet), overste-lojtnant Nikolaus von Vettern, major Fredrik Wilhelm von Holden, kaptens Karl Gustaf von Treiden, Karl Gustaf Taube, Henrik Johan von Essen, otto Gustaf Douglas, Justus Mensenkampff, Andreas Johan Kallmann, Adrian von Holden, Georg Gotlieb Schweb, Karl Gustaf von Nothafft, Jakob Gustaf von Bellingshausen, Samuel Benisch, Joakim Johan Muhlenbeck, Karl Ludolf von Vettern.
  • Livland varvade regiment under colonel Jakob Henrik von Schwengelm composed of 10 coys (75 men each): overste (colonel's Lifkompaniet), overste-lojtnant Magnus Fredrik Wolffelt, major Fabian Gustaf Aderkas, kaptens Fromhold Berg, Fredrik Kaspar von Schilling, Wolmar Otto von Derfelden, Tomas Gahrenfelt, Valentin Rommeling, Hans Henrik Wehber, Karl Johan Ekeskold.
Pernau was blockaded on 22 July 1710 by a Russian Corps under GL Bauer. It consisted of 6 Dragoon regiments: Kiev, Viatka, Troitckiy, Novotroitskiy, Yamburg, Neva. By that moment Riga had capitulated, & Swedish officers & soldiers of Livland-origin didn't have any reasons for a serious resistance. They sent a delegation to Bauer asking him to let them go to their estates. Bauer refused. He insisted on a capitulation of the Pernau garrison.
On 8 August Schwengelm himself came to Bauer to ask him to let Livland officers go off from Pernau. Bauer again refused & told that he was waiting for a siege artillery to start bombardment. It forced Swedes finally agreed to capitulate on the terms of free passage on 14 August of 1710.
Pernau garrison heavily suffered during the blockade & numbered only about 120-150 men on 15 August of 1710. The most of troopers entered Russian service.

Блокада и капитуляция Пернова, 22 июля - 15 августа 1710.

Relation about taking of Pernau

  1. Does it really say that Schwengeln came personally on 8 August? The standard Swedish work on the subject (by Arfwidsson) mentions this description of events, but gives the name as "Schreiterfelt". Schreiterfelt was a colonel but not a member of the garrison and seems to have come as representive of a group of Livonian nobles who did not consider themselves to be under Schwengeln's command. Arfwidsson notes that found no Swedish mention of the visit to Bour.

    1. The Relation mentions Schreitenfelt, but Gistoria - "commandant". I assume that "the colonel/commandant" whom came to Bauer was Schwengelm, not Schreiterfelt. I don't find any mention of Schreiterfelt's presention at Pernau in 1710. I assume that it was a mistake in the Relation, which was repeated by Arfwidsson

  2. Well, it would seem very unusual that the commander of a fortress personally went to the enemy camp and Schreiterfelt most certainly was present in Pernau. He was for example among those who on 11 August 1710 (Swedish style) met with Schwengeln to discuss the issue of surrender (Arfwidsson refers to the minutes of the discussion). Arfwidsson also used at least one letter sent by him from Pernau.

    1. Hello, Gustav!
Info about the battle in published Russian sources is very limited. Only official relation & some very breif descriptions in letters are available. No maps, tables, detailed reports, etc.
I will place my materials soon

  5. Thanks Mate!
That would be very nice of you to post that information!
Now I come with two more questions:
First, in the battle of Saladen, what Swedish Regiments participated in that battle? According to "Great Northern War-standards and Colours" by Lars Eric Höglund, there were 11 regiments! Is this true? If so, do you know what regiments that was?

Also the same question about Systerbäck- Is there any information about what Swedish Regiments that participated in Systerbäck?
